Jackson County - Present Courthouse | ||
Three courthouses have been erected on the public square on land deeded by Jacob and Ann Starcher in 1832. The first, completed in 1833, was a one-story of brick construction, 36’ square with a jail 34’ by 17’.
The contract for the second court house, a stone and brick two-story structure, was given in 1854 and the building was completed just a few days prior to the opening of the Civil War. It was similar in shape to the present court house and built in the same position on the lot. A four foot white fence surrounded the court house.
In 1917 the courthouse was deemed unsafe and court was moved to the I.O.O. F. building. The new building, erected by the Prescott Construction Company, was not completed until 1920. It was constructed of gray Indiana limestone. An addition was built in 1961.
